Field Investigation in Physical Geography

Funding + Time + Manpower = Limited

Almost every field course runs on this same tight math, so each stop made has to justify its place. This edit documents a lecturer's two-week field course with 20+ undergraduates in Kenya, using candid photos, casual clips, and a post-trip interview to show what was taught, where, and why it was worth the investment.

It's a raw, yet clear take of learning taking place outside of ivory towers. Hints of hit-the-sack fatigue seep through, but there’s a sense of quiet satisfaction from labouring towards real-world outcomes. Because text can’t quite capture this kind of nuance, I strived for a close second best.

A street scene with a bicycle rider wearing a red jacket, a person walking, and buildings with yellow walls advertising loans, under a cloudy sky, water puddles and mud on the road, and utility poles and wires.
Map showing the outline of Kenya with a white border, highlighting lakes and rivers, with a photograph of a smiling man wearing sunglasses and a hat labeled David Taylor in the bottom left corner. The background features a satellite image of the terrain, and the image credits to Google Earth, Landsat, Copernicus, Data SIO, and NOAA.
A group of people is launching a boat into a body of water from a rocky shoreline with a truck. The scene is outdoors with sparse trees and cloudy sky.
A green sign with white text hanging on a wall that reads, "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors instead we borrowed it from our children." The wall is textured, and the roof above appears old and weathered with moss or dirt.

"... we believe that it's not a good thing to see the world from a desktop;
you really have to be immersed in the environment physically—directly—to really understand what's happening in the world..."
