To Highland Bears, with Love

Yak herders, like Tuding, have shared the Tibetan plateau with brown bears for decades. Every year, their winter homes get broken into. Furniture gets smashed. The larder raided. But nothing these highland herdsmen have tried has worked. Not reinforced locks, not taller fencing.

I joined this project halfway through, after an earlier discarded edit leaned hard into old tropes, painting the animal as pure threat. Because what the client wanted wasn't a manhunt, but an honest look at what it takes to survive beside something wild without collapsing into fear. Or anger. Yes, compassion doesn't come easy when danger could easily tear down your front door. But a life already built around adapting to what the land gives, and takes, hints at a third option. And this documentary sits in that space. Unpacking what it actually means to share a shrinking world with the wild, in a way that's neither retreat nor retaliation.
